Winvhost00 gets some vmware upgrades

We've had some more problems with nds10ps, which is a virtual server hosted on winvhost00.

As part of trying to fix things, we've upgraded the vmware server on winvhost00 from 1.04 to 1.06, and installed the newest vmware tools on all the guest OSes. The guests are scripts01, scripts02, printsync and nds10ps

New Employee Information

NOTE TO REVIEWERS:
This document is intended to give some brief guidance to new employees, things that will help them get basically set up during their first week here. Things the Business Office does (parking, orientation, etc) for the most part won't be covered here, just a few links. I'm also not thinking about this as the place for in-depth descriptions of the services we offer/support.

Oh how I hate Novell's Client-32

So I've finally figured out why dynamic local user failed as soon as I installed Zen Agent 7.0.168.6000

Turns out, it removes the C:\Program Files\Novell\Zenworks entry from the path. It also depends on this to work. OMG.

Novell has a TID that suggests running
PATHMAN /as C:\Program Files\Novell\Zenworks

to make sure the entry gets written properly. So, having replaced the ACU with home grown code, we must now proceed to write more and more of the install logic.

Timesync adjusted on nds10ps

So, Kevin's been bearing the brunt of nds10ps suddenly deciding it doesn't want to keep timesync.

Looking over

http://www.nag.ncsu.edu/nag/timesync/index.html

I've changed nds10ps to NOT use the :123 port indicating that it should use NTP for time syncronization, but just listed the server names in the configured sources list, so NW will use it's own, magical sync protocol.

Notes on UNI04NT migration

So I wanted to gather my notes regarding what we need to do to murder UNI04NT.

Tomcat on port 8080

SLP-625 to move to new VM

I met with Tony and Bill on friday to discuss how we can transistion the SLP services and servers to their team.

The plan is that Bill will bring up a new VM to which we will assign the same IP addresses and SLP/Replica configuration that SLP-625 uses, so we can decommision it and reduce our servers in Poe Hall, and own one less NW 6.0 server.

CFS share update

Yesterday, I finally updated the firmware bios and HPA parameters on CFS1.  This completes the CFS share updates that Patrick and Provisioning needed us to do for the HPA's that touch the Clarion.  We are at version 1.52.  I also installed SanSurfer (a QLogic tool) on Patrick's recommendation to help manage the nodes.  The CFS share is still on CFS2 and does not need to move except for failing over which is handled by the PowerPath nodes.

Notes on C32 unattended install

So, I'm trying to make the academic Client-32 install as friendly as a can for administrative managed desktops.

Here's some notes regarding things we may need to revisit.

I'm installing NMAS, 'cause I assume ex-NCS clients need it. I loathe and despise NMAS, and so unless it's absolutely necessary, I will push to have it removed.

I'm unchecking the option "Use Novell GINA if a 3rd party GINA is found" to support biometric laptops et al. It will still ask.

First drive letter = H: ?

Some hope for the "alien human hybrid"

We've had some horrible interoperability issues with Client-32 re-writing UNC paths for Windows resources.  It's pitiful to see in the packet traces Windows servers getting pounded with requests on the Netware NCP port 524, which they will never answer.  It's painful for the clients as well, as the only connections are after "real" SMB has timed out and failed, and you fall back to the primative NetBIOS wrapped in an IP packet to get your connections.

Zen 7 SP1 Interim Release 3a version strings

So I've downloaded the "Zen 7 SP1 IR3a"  patches, recently posted on the Novell site (see \\unity.ad.ncsu.edu\dfs\oit\Applications\Novell)

The Zen agent included in this release, as identified by the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Novell\ZENworks\Version is  7.0.163.80421.

The good news is that this number is different, and larger than our current production release, which is  7.0.7.50808
